LARP Armor Safety Guide: What Every Player Needs to Know

Safety is one of the most important aspects of LARP β€” for you, your fellow players, and your event organizers. Armor that looks great but doesn't meet your event's safety requirements can get you turned away at the gate or cause injury during combat. This guide covers everything you need to know about LARP armor safety.

The Most Important Rule: Check Your Event's Rulebook

There is no single universal LARP armor safety standard. Every LARP system has its own rules governing materials, coverage, edge and surface finish, fastenings, protrusions, and armor thickness. Always read your specific event's rulebook before purchasing armor.

Common Safety Requirements Across LARP Systems

Safe Edges

Most LARP systems require that all armor edges be smooth and finished with no sharp burrs, raw cuts, or exposed metal edges. For steel armor, this typically means all edges ground smooth, no raw cut edges left unfinished, and rolled or folded edges where possible.

Secure Fastenings

Armor must be securely attached and must not come loose during combat. All straps and buckles must be functional and secure, with no armor pieces that can fall off or shift significantly during movement.

No Dangerous Protrusions

Many LARP systems prohibit armor with sharp spikes, points, or protrusions. Decorative spikes must be blunted or rounded, and rivets and decorative elements must be flush or safely rounded.

Material Restrictions

  • Steel β€” Permitted in many systems, prohibited in others.
  • Leather β€” Widely accepted across most LARP systems.
  • Foam β€” Required in some combat-heavy systems.
  • Thermoplastics β€” Accepted in many systems; check hardness requirements.

Helmet Safety

Helmets have some of the strictest safety requirements in LARP. Common requirements include adequate padding or lining, a secure chin strap or retention system, adequate visibility, and no sharp interior edges.

Armor Inspection at Events

Most LARP events conduct an armor inspection before the event begins. To pass inspection: bring your armor fully assembled, know your event's rules, arrive early, and have documentation available if the armor's material is questioned.

Wearing Armor Safely

  • Always wear appropriate underlayers β€” A gambeson or padded jacket protects your skin and absorbs impact.
  • Check all fastenings before combat β€” Loose straps can cause armor to shift at critical moments.
  • Know your mobility limits β€” Practice moving in your armor before your first event.
  • Stay hydrated β€” Armor, especially steel, increases body temperature.
  • Inspect your armor after each event β€” Check for damage, loose rivets, or worn straps.

Maintaining Your Armor for Safety

  • Steel armor β€” Wipe down, apply a light coat of oil, check all edges for new burrs.
  • Leather armor β€” Clean, condition, check stitching and fastenings.
  • All armor β€” Store in a dry location away from direct sunlight.
